Rockwood Community Call: Free and open to everyone

[Image Description: Purple text reads "ROCKWOOD LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE. Community Call with India Harville." Below is India, Black woman with long locs, wearing a green dress while sitting in her manual wheelchair with her blond service dog lab, Nico. Text below reads "April 25 - 12 PT/3 ET, Register at rockwoodleadership.org. Background is lush greenery with a purple and cream border.]

The next 60-minute Rockwood Community Call will be on April 25 at 12 PM PT / 3 PM ET and will be hosted by disability justice consultant, public speaker, somatics practitioner, and performance artist India Harville.

India has made it her mission to open people's minds to the wonder of their own bodies. She works diligently to foster a sense of the body as a vehicle for growth and transformation, both personal and collective. Whatever she is doing — practicing, performing, teaching — she is setting forth an example, that however our bodies show up the world, they are perfect, worthy of existence, and capable of magic.

We will be tapping into our resilience by connecting with five elements of nature - earth, water, fire, air, and ether.  We will begin with a grounding rooted in all five elements and then proceed to an embodied exploration of what medicine each individual element may offer to strengthen our resilience.

the 2023 sibling shindig

[Image Description: Gold border and text with a set of stars on each side reads “ The 2023 Sibling Shindig.”]

Come join The Sibling Transformation Project at the annual fundraiser, the Sibling Shindig!

STP is planning a party to celebrate with all of our participants, our families, our friends, and our whole communities. It's a great opportunity to connect with all parts of our programing - our cohorts, our affinity groups, our Kitchen Karaoke, and more!

We're thrilled to announce that Liat Ben-Moshe will be our keynote speaker! She is an interdisciplinary scholar-activist working at the intersection of disability/madness, incarceration/decarceration and abolition. She is the author of Decarcerating Disability: Deinstitutionalization and Prison Abolition (University of Minnesota Press 2020) and co-editor (with Allison Carey and Chris Chapman) of Disability Incarcerated: Imprisonment and Disability in the United States and Canada (Palgrave 2014). Dr. Ben-Moshe is an Associate Professor of Criminology, Law and Justice at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

For more info: https://www.liatbenmoshe.com/

Her work has really helped us understand how the history of deinstitutionalization of disabled people leads us to the moment we are in, in our families, in our lives, today and we are incredibly thrilled to have her joining us!

We're also planning to create some mingling and dancing time at this short and fun family-friendly event. You can even request your favorite song and dedicate it to a friend or family member!

Access Information

In addition to what is outlined in STP’s accessibility policy, the Sibling Shindig will also offer interpretation to ASL, as well as real time live captioning. Please let STP know if you need other interpretation or have additional access needs we should be aware of.

There are multiple options for tickets prices and sponsorship levels. Please choose what feels right to you! If you want to discuss other options or request a comp ticket, please email us: info@siblingtransformation.org.

We can't wait to share this celebration with you!

Come Join Us!

JJ Omelagah(They/Them) will be having a conversation about what an access doula is, why having one is important, how it relates to general self and community care, where you find one, etc.

JJ is a seasoned Access Doula with over a decade of experience. They started as a care provider for individual loved ones in 2011. As they interfaced with disabled communities more frequently, they started to provide access support for many different community members. Eventually, people recognized their capacity to support collective access for small and large group gatherings as well.  JJ has been an Access Doula for a variety of social gatherings, Sins Invalid events, DJCC, Dancing Freedom classes/workshops, East Bay Church gatherings, Movement Liberation workshops, and most recently at the 2022 Dancing Disability Lab. They currently serve as the executive manager at Embraced Body, a Disability Justice organization where they support building collective access for all of the staff members and for community events.

In addition to their work as an Access Doula, JJ is also a transgender vocal artist, trained Reiki practitioner, Ifa initiate, Disability Justice and LGBTQIA+  activist. They are also experienced in customer service, nonprofit organizations, case management, conflict resolution, and volunteer management. All of these skills support them being a well-rounded Access Doula.

When they aren’t working or singing, JJ enjoys spending quality time with their family, traveling, swimming, and spending time in nature.

Disability justice training for siblings of color

[Image Description: Black text that reads “Sibling Transformation Project” alongside logo which consists of blue, green, and purple adjacent triangles vertically aligned.]

Check out this awesome upcoming event from The Sibling Transformation Project! @siblingtransformation. Facilitation by India Harville, Founder of Embraced Body.

"Calling all Siblings of people with disabilities who are also people of color!

The Sibling Transformation Project knows how important a "caucus" space is for siblings - a space where we can be together with just other siblings of people with disabilities to share our experiences with each other and make meaning of what we've experienced in the world. And, we know that people with multiple marginalized identities need this kind of caucus space for these intersections, too.

Disability Justice is a movement led by disabled people of color - and as siblings, we can learn much from this movement about how to build an anti-ableist world. So, we're bringing all this together for a training just for siblings of people with disabilities who are also people of color on Disability Justice.

The training will be led by an amazing Disability Justice leader, India Harville. We're really excited to have India with us because she brings amazing facilitation, embodied presence, and lots of heart in addition to her really solid content in understanding Disability Justice."

India Harville & JJ Omelagah - “If You Can Breathe, You Can Sing and Dance”

Singing and dancing are our birthrights and a way for us to connect deeply to ourselves, to our communities, and to something greater than ourselves. Yet capitalism has lied to us and convinced us that only some people can sing or dance and that if you are not Whitney Houston or Neyo you better be quiet and sit down. This keeps us disconnected from the deep liberation, joy, and freedom that singing and dancing can offer each of us. Disabled people are often further shamed for the ways that their bodies deviate from how other people move and sound. We do this work to disrupt that notion. However you move and sound is beautiful and we want an opportunity to mirror that back to you.

Please join us for this virtual workshop where we will gently explore ways to reclaim our voices, our bodies, and our dances. No singing or dance experience required. Come join us and sound and move in whatever ways feel comfortable and accessible for your body. We will offer a variety of access-centered exercises to free our voices and movement. We can use these practices to build resilience and connection during this challenging time.
